Cows in the pasture

(Sorry, I love Johnny Horton songs.)

8:40am 4/10/2012  86078mi

Spring is upon us and we have decided to travel up to Rhode Island for a week or so to visit our children and grandchildren there.  We packed enough stuff in the car for a world cruise and on Tuesday the 10th of April, after a last minute stop in Lenoir City to top off the tank, we hit the Interstate and began our journey.  At 10:10, we stopped for breakfast at a Cracker Barrel in Morristown, TN.

A couple more hours into the trip, and we stopped for a stretch and saw cows in this pasture.  This is somewhere near Chrstiansburg, Virginia.  The wind was really blowing from the SW and we were pleased a bit later when we gassed up in Roanoke – 32.5mpg on the first tank.  We had lunch at Lew’s Restaurant on Rt.11 in Roanoke around 2:30 (86360mi).  The place looked like a dive from outside but served up really good food.  (It sometimes pays to explore off the beaten path.)

We stopped again at a rest stop near Winchester, Virginia and saw this relic of our past.  When did you last see a working phone booth?

Wow, these still exist!

Mileage here was 86473.

We carried on and our planned destination of Easton, Pennsylvania seemed to be getting farther away with each passing hour and when we finally arrived at 9:40pm (86738mi), this chauffeur was bushed!  Ah, sleep.

Up early and packed the car, ate a full breakfast and hit the road about 8:20.  We crossed the bridge into Phillipsburg, NJ where the gas was $3.839 for full service (that means only that they pump it) in New Jersey you cannot pump your own gas, draw your own conclusions as to why.

Crossing the Tappan Zee

A little less than two hours after leaving our motel in Easton, we crossed the Tappan-Zee Bridge into New York then took the Merritt Parkway across Connecticut.  We were glad we filled up in New Jersey, regular was $4.35 and UP all along the parkway and on I-95.  Plan to get gas anywhere but Connecticut – highest gas and bumpiest roads on the trip.  It is pretty though and at 12:20 with the odometer at 86952, we parked in Mystic, CT for some lunch at Mystic Pizza and shopping.

Remember this?

On to Providence in late afternoon check in to our hotel and had a great dinner at “Legal Seafood”.   Back to room for early night and gain strength for grand baby visit in the morning!
