Fall Golf at Fall Creek Falls…..

Our Lunch View

… Is that redundant or what?  Mary and I travelled to Fall Creek Falls State Park near Pikeville, Tennessee this past weekend to meet up with friends Bill and Phyllis for some golf on the mountain.  We travelled seperately so that we could carry all the stuff (golf clubs take an inordinate amount of space in a mid-sized car) and because we had different destinations after Monday’s golf .

We got underway Sunday at around 10:40am and took the scenic route through Athens, TN and across the Tennessee River to Dayton (home of the “Scopes monkey trial).  We discovered Jacob Myers’ Restaurant by the River on our trip to the bluegrass festival in Old Washington last April and

Mary by the Lilly Pads

wanted to visit it again in warmer weather.  The lunch was excellent (Boom Boom burger, Buffalo chicken sandwich, kettle chips and Amber Bock beer) and the view of the channel and “The Point” was beautiful with the fall color and mill pond serenity of the lake.

TVA has started the drawdown to Winter levels so the lilly pads were mostly on stems above the water.  After a short walk we drove around Daytom and discovered “Fein House” an upscale restaurant in an 1890s Victorian house that is only open Thursday-Saturday evenings – maybe another trip.  We headed on up the mountain and took a detour through downtown Pikeville and decided it would be worth a future weekday or saturday visit.  Arrived at the park about 2::30 and decided to hit a few balls at the golf course before our 4ish meeting with Bill & Phyllis at the inn.

Sunset on the lake

At our meetup with Phyllis and bill, we decided to return to the golf course and try to get in 9 holes before dark.  The course was spectacular and our golf was less so but we did manage to hack our way through the front 9 before real darkness at 6:30pm central time!  We say many deer on the course and they seemed to be telling us that twilight was their time on the course.  The deer watched us a bit but seemed to say that our golf wasn’t particularly interesting to them.  Then back to the inn for a cold beer and then dinner before crashing for the night.

Sunrise from our balcony

Monday morning revealed this spectacular view from our hotel room balcony.  Then off to breakfast at 8:30 before our 10am tee time.

The golf was much better in daylight with Richard recording a 97 and Mary a 111 for the 18 holes.  We finished the round and grabbed a quick lunch and headed for home around 4pm arriving at about 6:30 tired but pleased with our outing.  We’ll head back up here again.
