Into our slip

12 August 2009 | Tellico Lake, TN

We travelled from North Carolina to Cookville, TN to have the new motor installed, then back to Tellico Lake to launch and test drive the new motor. Grandson Zack accompanied me on the 5 mile trip from the launch ramp to our berth in the Tellico Yacht Club.

Silver Lining is snug in her berth.

Motor is beyond me!

Well a whole lot of effort and expense went into trying to get a year or two out of the old Nissan 40. I’m just not going to mess with it anymore so I ordered a new motor – Tohatsu 30 w/power tilt/trim, EFI – quiet, smooth. Mary will be able to do whatever she needs with it. Definite safety advantage. Will pick it up next week.

Trailer is ready

03 August 2009 | Winston-Salem, NC

When we launched Silver Lining last month, the trailer was all over the road so in preparation for the move to Tellico Village, my sailing buddy Jim took the trailer to the shop for some much-needed maintenance. New tires, repacked bearings and a repaired centerboard support bracket and she’s ready to go.

Thanks Captain Jim for your help.

Silver Lining's new home

Got my slip

15 July 2009 | Tellico Village, TN

I got my slip assigned in the TVYC and will move the boat as soon as we get the motor working and the house sold.

(March 2011 – changed slip from E-50 to E-18.  Closer to shore and more sheltered from the weather.)

18 March 2009 | Home

Finally, a warm day without rain.

Jim Hatchell limped over to the Norman household and we changed the water pump, lower end gear oil and spark plugs.

It went well and other than a bit of beginner’s jitters, without significant incident. The engine ran a bit rough before changing the plugs so we cleaned the fuel bowl filter as well. She ran a bit ragged but settled dowm after blowing out the fuel system scum ( hadn’t been run for over a year ).

I may see about adding a power tilt/trim to this motor instead of springing for the $4000+ for a new motor.

I have to have surgery in early December so Jim Hatchell and I pulled Silver Lining and brought her home until I’ve recovered from surgery and am able to spend some more time getting her ready for Tellico.

Just a short day on the water – Donn Linton and I in the MAC and Jim Hatchell in his CP19. More of a drift about morning than a real sail but we did get the opportunity to exercise the boats a bit and play with tuning for very light air. Relaxed the outhaul and vang and flew the jib loose for max wind capture. We did hit 2-3kts a few times but most of the morning was just chasing the breeze.

Another success as we got underway and returned under sail alone and no blood or broken parts on us or the boat.

Jim Hatchell & I took her out for a shakedown. We sailed for about 3 hours and tried pointing, running, reaching and all the basic sailing maneuvers we could in the light winds.

Silver Lining pointed very well and was easy to tack and jibe – she didn’t show us any warts. I’ll list the C22 for sale today, this boat is a keeper.

25 July 2008 | Salem Lake, NC

Today was our first launch and sail in S/V Silver Lining. After a couple of false starts, we arrives at the lake and rigged and launched in about 45 minutes. (Mary & I hadn’t done this in a couple of years so I believe our rig/launch time was acceptable.)

We filled the ballast tank and fired up the untried outboard – no water flow as feared – will need to address this when we pull the boat next week.

With a gentle push, we moved from the ramp and hoisted sail. Since this was our “Get acquainted” outing, we basically took it easy on the boat and ourselves. Everything worked and nothing broke so it was a successful outing.
