Once again, fishing buddy Jim Hatchell and I made our (sort of) annual pilgrimage to the Davidson River in Brevard, North Carolina. As in past years, Jim had camp setup when I arrived so we just sorted flies and tackle and caught up on news.
I had purchased a special 2-for-1 pass to Davidson River Outfitters’ private waters and we had been anticipating battling giant trout all year. In past visits, we had done fairly well in small streams but the heavily fished Davidson River had not provided us much action.
Monday morning found us shivering around the coffee pot and layering up before heading to the DRO shop to pick up a map of the private waters and some tips on good access points. As soon as the sun burned through the morning fog, we started peeling off layers of clothing and wishing we had chosen to wet wade instead of wearing full waders.
We weren’t disappointed as both Jim and I caught some nice fish. We decided the DRO folks must feed these guys steroids as they fought much more than their size would indicate.
As usual, trout tend to live in beautiful places and wading this river in western North Carolina provided beautiful scenery to accompany our fishing.
Our stay lasted three more days with intermittent fishing and sightseeing. See my next posts for side-trips.
