Mary atop the dam

Mary atop the dam

As we get these warmish fall days, Mary and I like to get out and drink in the beautiful scenery.

Here, Mary is looking from the top of Tellico Dam into the Little Tennessee River.  About a quarter mile further down river, the Little Tennessee ends as it flows into the Tennessee River and Watts Barr Lake.

The fishing boat below the dam is looking for striped bass as they come up to feed in the tail-waters.

Mary walking

We walk from the parking lot at the Tellico/Ft. Loudon canal to Tellico Dam – about a 2.5 mile round trip.  The view was better before the TVA installed the wire baskets atop the dam (in the picture to the right) last year to hold back the 1000 year flood.  (of course they put these up without attention to EPA regs or filing impact statements).  Still, it is a nice walk and the view can be spectacular.  Just beyond the dam in Tellico Lake is a great anchorage, the large cruiser pictured in the slideshow below is about a mile away from us.  In the summer on weekends, there are often a dozen or more boats in that part of the lake but this time of year, it can be a solitary experience.
