1954 and I was 7 years old and a really big fan of grade “B” sci-fi movies. Saturday was the time to go to the matinee for a double feature, cartoons, popcorn, coke and JuJu Bees.
If you weren’t there it is hard to describe the mania surrounding the absolute belief in technology as the answer for all of mankind’s problems (except the technology that caused some of those problems). It was a time of discovery and no doubts at all about the American superiority in technology on the earth and beyond.
And ROBOTS! They were going to save us all except when things went wrong. This film was unsettling in that things did go terribly wrong and it seemed that technology itself turned against it’s creators. No, it isn’t a great classic and the special effects were positively hokey by today’s standards but as a 7-year-old it was fantastic.
